Visibility Has a Cost, and I Pay It Anyway

Being visibly queer in public is a choice with a price tag, and the price is not evenly distributed. For me, being out means the occasional stare, the comment, the wondering whether a given room will be fine. For others it means real danger. Anyone who tells you visibility is free has never had to budget for it.

I pay it anyway, and I want to be honest about why. Partly it is stubbornness. Mostly it is that somewhere there is a younger version of me who needs to see an adult living a whole, ordinary, unapologetic life and turning out fine. I did not have many of those. Being one is the rent I pay on the freedom I have now.

But I will never tell someone they owe the world their visibility. Staying safe is not staying in the closet. Survival is its own kind of resistance, and nobody gets to send you the bill.
