Coming Out Is Not a Single Door
People talk about coming out like it is one door you walk through once. It is not. It is a door you find again at every new job, every new doctor, every new group chat, every form that only offers two boxes. You do not come out. You keep coming out, for the rest of your life, and you do the quiet arithmetic each time about whether this particular room is safe.
That arithmetic is invisible to people who have never had to do it, and it is exhausting in a way that is hard to explain. It is not drama. It is a tax — a small recurring cost levied on being honest about who you are.
So when someone trusts you with this, understand what it cost to say it out loud one more time. The kindest thing you can do is make the next door easier than the last one.
