Chosen Family Is Still Family

Some of us were lucky with the families we were born into. Some of us were not. And a lot of queer people learned early that family is not only a thing you inherit — it is also a thing you build, on purpose, out of the people who show up.

Chosen family is the friend who drove four hours when everything fell apart. It is the dinner table where nobody flinches at your name or your pronouns because they were there when you chose them. It is not a consolation prize for the family that did not work out. For many of us it is the realest family we have.

I have stopped qualifying it. They are not my “chosen family” like it needs an asterisk. They are my family. The verb in front does not make the noun any smaller.
