The Printer Is Down Again

There is a law of office infrastructure that no vendor will admit to: the printer is a small, networked computer that has chosen violence. It holds an IP address it will not renew, a driver three versions behind, and a spooler that jams the instant someone important needs a boarding pass.

We pour real engineering into uptime — redundant power, failover links, monitored backups — and then the single point of failure that generates the most tickets is a beige box in the corner that costs less than the toner it eats. The mismatch is almost funny.

The fix is rarely glamorous: a static reservation, a current driver, a print server that owns the queue instead of forty laptops fighting over it. Boring, documented, and reliable. Treat the printer like infrastructure and it stops behaving like a houseplant with opinions.
