The Backup Nobody Ever Tested

A backup you have never restored is not a backup. It is a hope with a cron job. The green checkmark in the dashboard tells you a file was written; it tells you nothing about whether that file is complete, readable, or the right data from the right night.

The worst day to discover your restore is broken is the day you need it. That is when you learn the database dump excluded a schema, the encryption key lived only on the dead server, or the retention window quietly rolled past the moment things went wrong. Every one of those is survivable in a drill and fatal in a crisis.

So test the restore. On a schedule, into a scratch environment, with someone timing it. Recovery is a capability, not a configuration — and a capability you have never exercised is just a story you tell yourself until the outage rewrites the ending.
